The beginning of stock exchange
The original intention of setting up the stock exchange is to facilitate the transfer of capital from investor to business who needs it. Along the years, there are many bubbles that resulted from this brilliant idea of capitalism, but in times of uncertainty, it is often to useful to go back to the roots. Stocks represents ownership of the underlying business, and stock exchange is the venue that allows the transfer of such ownership from one investor to another.
Wikipedia has a nice article on the history and origin of the stock exchange.
